Symbian vs Windows Mobile – which is the best?

Let’s check out how the big, well-established operating systems stand up against each other. The battle lines are drawn; Symbian and Windows Mobile are going to war.

Samsung i8910 HD – the first phone to record true HD video

From Samsung comes a first in the world of mobile phones, with the Samsung i8910 HD. It’s not the first 8MP phone to have a touchscreen, or to use the TouchWiz UI, but it is the only phone in the entire world that will record true HD video at 720p resolution. So, in essence, the Samsung i8910 HD doesn’t just give you an incredible stills camera, it also becomes a proper, HD camcorder. A lot of people have also speculated that it’s no coincidence that 720p is also the format Youtube uses for its HD videos. Could the Samsung i8910 HD be the first HD Youtube phone? It’s not being marketed as that (so far), but it’s a compelling thought, nonetheless. Imagine grabbing a video in pin-sharp HD, then directly uploading it to Youtube, at speeds comparable to home broadband. The Samsung i8910 HD can do that!

Nokia N97 – touch and type

With the Nokia 5800 all set to deliver touch-based mobile phones to the mid-range market, that opens up a massive gap at the very top-end of the product range; well, there IS a touchscreen mobile phone on its way to fill that gap: the utterly awesome Nokia N97. This takes the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system and packages it inside the body of a proper, full-on smartphone. So it has a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a kick out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera’s been upgraded to 5 megapixels.

The Nokia N97 is, as should be glaringly obvious, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it really is as powerful as the rumours had us believe, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you have an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is simply incredible.

Toshiba TG01

So, on the Symbian front, you have the Nokia N97, sporting its superb keyboard and massive internal memory. And as a double header for Symbian, there’s the video-centric Samsung i8910 HD. But Windows Mobile goes down a different route. You see, Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a powerful processor and a big display. Well, say hello to the Toshiba TG01, the phone with the fastest processor AND the biggest display in the history of phones! Weighing in at 1GHz and 4.1 inches respectively, those specs mean that the Toshiba TG01 will run Windows Mobile more smoothly than any other phone in existence; as well as that with that immense screen, the Toshiba TG01 makes drilling down into menus, and actually getting into the internals of Windows, so much easier. If power is your thing (and lets be honest, who doesn’t want a powerful phone?), then the Toshiba TG01 is the phone for you!
